InterContinental Berlin Once Again Awarded Green Key Certificate
Berlin, March 5, 2025 – The InterContinental Berlin remains on course for sustainability and climate protection: In February 2025, the prestigious Green Key certificate from the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) was once again awarded to the hotel. The property had first received this globally recognized distinction in February 2024, which stands for particularly sustainable and environmentally conscious operations.
“Sustainability is an integral part of our corporate culture,” emphasizes General Manager Sebastian Germershausen. Office Manager Christiane Reisberger, who played a key role in the certification process, adds: “The re-certification demonstrates that we remain committed to our high environmental and social standards while continuously working towards an even more climate-friendly future.”
The Green Key certificate is only awarded to hotels that meet strict criteria in 13 areas – ranging from energy efficiency and water consumption to sustainable procurement, as well as social and ecological aspects. The international organization places particular emphasis on the long-term improvement of sustainability strategies. Regular audits ensure that the high standards are not only maintained but continuously enhanced.
As part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Journey to Tomorrow program, the InterContinental Berlin consistently implements innovative and resource-efficient solutions. Since the initial certification in 2024, additional measures have been introduced to further reduce the hotel’s ecological footprint. These include an increased use of renewable energies and optimized waste management. The hotel also prioritizes close partnerships with local producers and sustainable supply chains.
A milestone in the hotel’s green development was the comprehensive modernization of the property, with an investment of nearly 64 million euros by IHG® Hotels & Resorts and Union Investment. These sustainable construction measures have already been recognized with the LEED Gold Award and have significantly contributed to reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
“The renewed Green Key certification is both a confirmation of our efforts and an incentive to consistently pursue our path,” says Germershausen. “We aim not only to meet standards but to take on a pioneering role in sustainable tourism and inspire others.”
With the Green Key certificate, the InterContinental Berlin reaffirms its commitment to responsible business practices – for the benefit of its guests, employees, and the planet.
