Since 1st January 2014, the overnight stay tax adopted by the Berlin Senate in the amount of 5% of the net room price has been applied to tourist accommodation for bookings in Berlin as of 1st January 2014. This tax is collected by us and paid to the City of Berlin. Overnight stays for business purposes are exempt from the overnight stay tax. This is why we have to enquire about the reason for your visit – that is, whether it is for private or business purposes. Simply provide us with this information on the registration card at check-in.
We kindly ask you to understand that we have to comply with the obligations imposed on us by the Senate and to collect the tax as a result. Both as an individual hotel and as a member of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA), we are opposed to the introduction of the tax and we are awaiting the judgement of a class action suit asserted against it.
As a hotel, we have to ask you about the purpose of your visit – whether, it is for business or private purposes – as the tax is levied solely on private visits. If no information is provided, we will assume that the visit is being made for private purposes.
You can prove the purpose of your visit. This is voluntary and happens in the case of business trips, for example, by booking or paying via your employer, or by means of the invoice being issued to your employer. Self-employed persons or business owners can provide proof themselves by referring to their tax ID.
In the case of a private visit, the tax is shown in your final invoice and added directly to your invoice amount. We have no influence as a hotel on these additional costs and we are obliged to comply with them by the Berlin Senate.
